Smoking is one of the biggest causes of death in Europe, killing over 1 million people each year. France has the highest number of smokers in the European Union. Quitting smoking as early as possible is the best way to lower the risk of dying from tobacco-related diseases. But in France, many people don’t stop smoking until after age 50, which means they still face a high risk of tobacco-related disease.
The TABAQUIT project aims to show just how important it is to quit smoking earlier in life. We want to help individuals and public health leaders understand how stopping earlier can greatly reduce cancer cases and deaths based on data from cohorts.
Our goals are:
1. To find out how the age at which people quit smoking affects their chances of getting or dying from cancer, in France and five other European countries.
2. To look at trends in when people are quitting and predict how many cancer cases and deaths could be avoided in France if people quit 1, 2, 5, or even 10 years earlier.
3. To develop a web-based tool to share this information clearly with the public and with policy makers so it can be used to shape better anti-smoking strategies.
With this project, we hope to give people and decision-makers the knowledge they need to take action and reduce the impact of smoking on cancer in France and across Europe.
