France has one of the highest rates of high-risk opioid medication use in Europe, with an estimated 10 million French citizens (17% of the population) receiving aprescription for opioids each year. Because of their euphoric effects and addictivenature, these medications are often misused. Our project aims to address anoverlooked aspect of widespread opioid use, specifically its potential to impact long-term health as a cause of cancer and death. Our study design will allow us to deliverrobust evidence on the long-term health consequences of using opioid medications, which has been previously unexplored due to methodological limitations. Our resultscould aid in the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines for using opioidsin chronic pain management, as well as comprehensive national prevention policiesto reduce the long-term harms of opioid misuse.
