We hypothesize that early-onset lung cancer differs epidemiologically and biologically from lung cancer in older adults. To evaluate this hypothesis, we will utilise multiple several large-scale data sets with risk factor information and omics data.
Objectives and methods
Objective 1. To examine how conventional epidemiological factors differ in their associations with lung cancer risk between younger and older individuals.
Objective 2. To identify biomarkers that are specifically informative in predicting risk for early-onset lung cancer using a multi-omics approach.
Objective 3. To examine how prognostic factors differ in their associations with survival between lung cancer diagnosed in younger and older individuals.
Our study represents an unprecedented opportunity to leverage large population data and multi-omics analysis to advance our understanding of the etiology of early-onset lung cancer. The successful completion of this study will provide high-quality evidence to support the integration of biomarker-informed strategies for identifying young adults at high risk of lung cancer and a better prediction of survival for lung cancer patients at younger ages. Ultimately, our findings will inform stakeholders to implement age-specific prevention, early detection, and prognostic support strategies for lung cancer.
